Selection Criteria

The e-codices selection criteria were developed by the 10 largest manuscript libraries, together with the "Codices electronici Confoederationis Helveticae" curatorium and the curatorium for "Katalogisierung der mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Handschriften der Schweiz" (Cataloging of Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts in Switzerland). The selection guidelines jointly approved on 4. March 2010 stipulate that a manuscript must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  1. The manuscript has a high public profile: it is often requested, the original needs to be protected, and it is clear that making quality reproductions available for use in publications will be worthwhile.
  2. The manuscript is of great scientific interest, though little known: digitization can be understood as an invitation to further investigation.
  3. The manuscript is part of a sub-project funded by external grant funding (for ex., presentation of Greek sources financed by the Greek Stavros Niarchos Foundation).
  4. The manuscript has been proposed in response to a “call for collaboration”: it is absolutely clear that the reproduction will be utilized.
  5. The manuscript is of great value in connection with the identity of a specific group, representing a broader audience in addition to scholarly researchers (for ex., political groups or cantonal endowments).
  6. The manuscript will be an exhibit object: the manuscript will be part of a planned exhibition and the exhibitor is interested in digital presentation as well. A security copy can simultaneously be made when reproductions for exhibition use are being produced.
  7. The manuscript will be restored: if the manuscript is unbound and the leaves can be laid flat, a very high quality facsimile, with no page-curve distortions, can be produced.
  8. A manuscript facsimile edition is planned: reproductions following the "Freiburger Richtlinien" (Fribourg Guidelines) meet the requirements set by facsimile edition publishers.
  9. The manuscript will be used for teaching or other educational purposes.
