Thin evangelistary, consisting of only 32 parchment leaves containing 27 pericopes. The very carefully produced codex, which has only a leather binding, is decorated with artistic initials in red and black ink. Although it is not dated, based on the script and decoration the codex can be assigned to the abbots Frowin (1143-1178) and Berchtold (1178-1197).

This manuscript contains several texts copied between the 13th and the 16th century. The oldest one is the Solemn Evangelistary of St. Pierre Cathedral of Geneva (ff. 5-28v), which, according to its illuminations (esp. f. 5r), was probably created in Paris, even though the pericopes correspond to the feast days particular to Geneva. This is followed by excerpts from the sung Gospels (with staff notation) from the 14th and 15th century, one of which is an interesting late 15th century liturgical witness for the feast of the Epiphany (ff. 37v-40r).

This manuscript was written by Johannes Molitor of Winterthur and is dated 2 December 1432. It contains German translations of the Gospels for Sundays and the most important feast days. It belonged to Veronika von Hettlingen, mother superior of Hermetschwil Abbey from 1498 until 1507.

This 10th century Latin manuscript originated in the St. Gall scriptorium. It belonged to the Bishop of Strasbourg Erchembald (965-991) and was kept in the Cathedral of Strasbourg. The humanist Wimpheling mentions consulting it in Strasbourg in the early years of the 16th century. This manuscript appeared in the sales catalog of the Ambroise Firmin-Didot collection and was bought by the Mulhouse alderman Armand Weiss (1821-1892); after his death, he left it to the Industrial Society of Mulhouse. The Carolingian Gospel Book was written on vellum and contains 300 initials decorated with gold and silver. The beginning and end of the manuscript contain historical annotations. The original binding no longer exists; it was replaced with a contemporary binding during restoration at the Bibliothèque Nationale around 1970.

Fragment of an evangeliary written around 800. It contains the pericopes necessary for the entire liturgical year. The surviving parts begin with the pericope for Septuagesima Sunday and suggest that, in addition to Sundays and holidays, gospels were chosen for every Wednesday and Friday, and during Lent - as in the Missale Romanum - for every day of the week. The final part contains the gospels for the votive Mass, however only four pericopes have survived. The script indicates a scriptorium in Raetia Curiensis as place of origin.

Parchment fragment (1 leaf) with an excerpt from an evangeliary from around 800. The text is written in a graceful Rhaetian minuscule. The titles are rubricated and individual uppercase letters are executed in red. The surviving section of text covers Septuagesima to Quinquagesima Sundays well as the Sundays and weekdays from the first Sunday of Lent to the first Passion Sunday.

The Silver Evangelary was produced during the12th century, probably in the Upper Rhine region. It was first listed in 1646 in the Inventarium Custodiae S. Ursi, p. 48, "Ein altes Evangelij Buoch, dessen Deckhel von Silber". The political programme of Charlemagne included the standardization of religious life following the example of the Roman liturgy in the time of Pope Gregory the Great. Under this regimen books containing transcriptions of the Gospels, called "evangelaries", were produced.

The Liber viventium Fabariensis is likely the most important surviving work of Rhaetish book art. This manuscript was originally designed as an Evangelistary and richly adorned with initials, frames for canonical tables and full-page illustrations of the symbols of the four evangelists. Starting in 830 the names of monks who joined the monastic community were listed in the empty canonical table frames, together with living and deceased benefactors of the abbey. In addition to its function as evangelistary, memorial and record of the monastic brotherhood, the Liber viventium was later also used to preserve the historial records and treasure catalog of Pfäfers Abbey. Because of the legal importance of the Liber viventium up to modern times, the volume is housed in the archival collection of Pfäfers Abbey.

Liber Aureus, the Golden Book of Pfäfers, was originally produced in about 1080/90 as an Evangelistary, decorated with artistic portraits of the four evangelists. The free space left between the readings was used in the 14th century for the recording of "Weistümern" (judicial sentences).

According to new research, the so-called Evangeliary of Wolfcoz - an early masterpiece from the second quarter of the 9th century - was created not at the St. Gall Monastery, but instead in the scriptorium at Reichenau under the librarian Reginbert. This new conclusion was reached on the basis of paleographic studies as well as later-added pericopes on the Reichenau saints George, Mark and Pancras (p. 201-219).

A volume of the Gospels, made to order for an unknown customer in about 1470/1480, possibly in the workshop of the book illustrator Rudolf Stahel of Konstanz. It contains Latin Gospel readings for the most important holy days of the church year. Illustrated by at least two artists with 21 full-page illustrations, including the symbols of the four evangelists and representations of the most important holy days throughout the year. In 1658 the volume was presented by the court official Fidel von Thurn to Abbot Gallus Alt (1654-1687) and decorated by a book illuminator with his crest.

This folio-format miscellany is formatted as a single column in a looping bastarda script. On the former flyleaf there is a fragmentary evangeliary, also in a looping bastarda, (Mc 16:1; Lc 24:13; Lc 24:39; Io 21:1; Io 20:11 on pp. 3a–4b). The main part, which consists of moral-theological definitions and short narratives (pp. 5-297), has in ink original numbering in the centre of each leaf (1-150), as well as an accompanying table of contents (pp. 297-301). Before the table of contents there is a doxology and a book curse written as a shape poem which contrasts the salvation of the writer with that of a book thief (p. 297). A sermon for All Saints' Day is written onto the last page as well as the endpaper (p. 302a-303b). On the verso side of the endpaper are the legend of the journey of the thirty pieces of silver from Abraham up until Judas' betrayal (p. 304a) and a note in German about the pawning of the manuscript: the previous owner, Hans Rich, parish priest in Mosnang pawned the manuscript for four guilders and ten shillings (p. 304b). This final column has been stamped with the 1553-1564 St. Gallen library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer. The offset of a calendar is visible on the inside of the front and rear boards. The St. Gallen librarian Jodokus Metzler has stuck a table of contents onto the inside front cover. The leaf p. 1-2 is missing. The holes from five since lost buckles are visible in both the front and back of the brown leather covering the wooden board binding with plaited endband. The remains of two buckle straps can be seen on the back of the book, each fastened with a decorative tack in a floral design (15th or 16th century). On the front there are two stamped holes for the two buckles.

Cod. Sang. 1397 is one of eight fragment volumes (that is, volumes that contain exclusively fragments) of the Abbey Library of St. Gall. Between 1774 and 1785, the St. Gall monks Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger (1756–1823) and Ildefons von Arx (1755–1833) detached numerous fragments from bindings in which they had served for centuries as pastedowns, flyleaves, spine linings, and endleaf guards. At an advanced age, Ildefons von Arx had the fragments bound in eight thematically-organized bindings and dedicated these in 1822 to his friend Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger. Chiefly in the twentieth century, researchers found additional, small fragments in bindings, from which they were then removed and added to the existing fragment volumes or into the collection of fragments. From 2005 to 2006 the extensive fragment volume Cod. Sang. 1397 was disbound for conservation reasons. The fragments were rebound (in the same sequence) in 23 folders (“Ganzpapierbroschuren”). The new, now authoritative pagination begins with 1 in each folder and includes only the fragments (and not the empty paper leaves). To be cited (for example): St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. Sang. 1397.1, pp. 1-2 (= Cod. Sang. 1397, Folder 1, pages 1-2). The thirteenth folder of Cod. Sang. 1397 contains fragments from five liturgical manuscripts from the eleventh to the thirteenth century.
