Augustinus, Aurelius (354-430)
This Evangelary with an unusual, nearly square format and full-page illuminated initials was written and decorated in the late 9th century at the Abbey of St. Gall. The binding, which was originally covered in bright silk brocade in red, yellow, and green, is equally unusual. Remnants of this material can still be found on the inner edge of the cover. The volume was annotated by Ekkehart IV during the 11th century; there are also some verses in his hand at the end.

This copy of the so-called Chrysostomus Latinus is significant in terms of textual history study. This collection of 38 sermons and other works attributed to the early church father John Chrysostom (349/50-407) includes both ancient Latin translations of original works in Greek reliably attributable to John Chrysostom, and also some pieces originally written in Latin, the contents of some of which are identified and some are not, for which the celebrated sermonist is claimed as the author. A St. Gall copy from the second half of the 9th century.

A composite manuscript consisting of two distinct parts: 1) a 9th century St. Gall copy of the commentary of Jerome on the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes and the commentary of Bishop Justus of Seu de Urgel (Urgelitanus) on the Song of Songs, 2) a collection of manuscripts of mainly patristic content, including excerpts from the works of Jerome, Benedict, Eucherius and Augustine. The manuscript, still in its original Carolingian binding, is also called the Egino-Codex and is supposed to have been produced in about the year 800 at the cloister of Reichenau by a group of Veronese scribes who had settled on the island of Reichenau together with their former (Veronese) bishop (796-799) Egino after he stepped down from his office.

Copies of Jerome's letter to Ktesiphon (Letter 133) and his Dialogus adversus Pelagianos, the work De vita christiana, ascribed to Pelagius and the work Altercatio Ecclesiae et Synagogae, incorrectly ascribed to Augustine. A three-part manuscript compilation, most likely written at the beginning of the 10th century. In the 11th century the monk Ekkehart IV. added numerous marginal and interlinear glosses. The contents of the first part include mostly works by Augustine (letters 214-216 to the Abbot Valentine; De libero arbitrio (On free will); the anti-arian piece Contra Felicianum Arianum de unitate trinitatis; De magistro (On the teacher). The second part contains assorted, mostly shorter, liturgical tracts (such as Ordo ecclesiasticus romanae ecclesiae qualiter missa celebratur; Ordo librorum catholicorum; De vestimentis sacerdotalibus). The third part contains a compilation of short canon law texts.

An undecorated composite manuscript containing various short texts and textual excerpts from the writings of Augustine, John Chrysostom and Ambrosius Autpertus († 784) among others, together with the work, then attributed to Seneca, De moribus (145 moral proverbs, which were probably composed by a Christian living in Gaul). The codex was written in about 900 in a Carolingian minuscule, probably in northern France. The back portion contains, in a short selection from Moralia in Iob by Gregory the Great, a small Latin-Old High German textual glossary.

A copy of Augustine's work De genesi contra manichaeos, written in Carolingian minuscule during the first third of the 9th century at the Abbey of St. Gall. The numerous glosses in Latin were added during the 11th century; frequent supposition of their attribution to St. St. Gall monk Ekkehart IV. appears questionable. This composite manuscript from the beginning of the 9th century, made up of two parts, was written at the Abbey of St. Gall and remains in its original Carolingian binding. The first part contains two works by the church father Augustine, the sermon De decem chordis and the text De disciplina christiana, as well as the work Adversus quinque haereses by Bishop Quodvultdeus of Carthage († 454). The second part contains, among various other short texts, a copy of the epitaph of Alcuin of York († 804), his book about virtues and vices De virtutibus et vitiis, dedicated to Duke Wido of Nantes, two sermons by Augustine as well as the so-called Dicta Bonifatii. Glosses were added here and there in both parts of the manuscript by the monk Ekkehart IV. during the first half of the 11th century; the codex shows signs of use through the 16th century.

An important copy of Augustine's work De doctrina christiana in terms of textual history, written during the second half of the 9th century at the Abbey of St. Gall. In the 1930s fragments of the oldest Vulgate manuscript version of the gospels, from the 5th century, were removed from the binding of this manuscript. These fragments are now found, together with additional fragments of the same manuscript as well as fragments of other texts, in Cod. Sang. 1395.

This codex consists mainly of copies of letters written by the church father Augustine († 430), produced in the second half of the 9th century, possibly in Mainz. A small section at the front and some pages at the end, however, were produced in the 11th century, during the tenure of Ekkehart IV († um 1060), in the Cloister of St. Gall; these sections contain a Latin version of the Old High German "Galluslied" (originally written by the St. St. Gall monk Ratpert), translated by Ekkehart IV, and various excerpts of mathematical and astronomical content.

In this manuscript, the pseudo-Augustinian work Categoriae decem ex Aristotele decerptae bears the title Cathegoriae Aristotelis ab Augustino translatae ad filium suum Adeodatum. It is preceded by a fragment from Book 1 of the Periphyseon by Johannes Scottus Eriugena (about categories) and by verses by Alcuin of York to Charlemagne. From its inception, this copy of uncertain origin from the middle of the 9th century was designed to be glossed; the wide central column of text is surrounded by marginal glosses as well as several interlinear glosses.

This small-format prayer book in German contains prayers to Christ, on the Passion and on Communion, to Mary, Mother of God, and to various saints, further prayers on various topics, reflections on the Passion, and devotions according to Johannes Gerson. On f. 38v and 39r there are two full-page miniatures. They depict Christ on the cross with Mary and John (f. 38v) and the Pietà with the instruments of torture (Arma Christi, f. 39r). The manuscript was probably written for a women's convent or for female users, although some male forms also appear in the prayers. According to the ownership note on f. 185r, in the 17th century the book was owned by the Benedictine Convent St. Wiborada in St. Georgen above St. Gall.

A composite manuscript, produced for the most part during the 9th century at the Abbey of St. Gall. In addition to some shorter texts with computistic-chronological, homiletic and liturgical content, the manuscript contains as its main elements a copy of the Book of Pennance (Poenitentiale) by Bishop Halitgar of Cambrai († 830), excerpts from the rule of Fructuosus of Braga (7th century), and the tract De duodecim abusivis saeculi, a work by an unknown Irish author, long attributed to Cyprian of Carthage.

A canon law manuscript from the first half of the 9th century, produced in the southern German-speaking region, probably in Bavaria. It contains, among other items, versions of the so-called Collection canonum Vetus Gallica with an appendix, Charlemagne's Capitulary of Herstal, the so-called Excarpsus Cummenai and, under the title De triduanis ieiuniis consuetudine, an incomplete copy of a set of guidelines for fasting.

Five codicological units make up this paper manuscript; the text was written by one or more hands in the fifteenth century. The longest texts in the manuscript are the Tractatus de vitiis capitalibus, which is probably to be ascribed to Robert Holcot, the Dialogus rationis et conscientiae of Matthew of Krakow, and the Dialogus de celebratione missae by Henry of Hessia the Younger. The remaining texts are shorter, including sermons, spiritual instructions, and astrological and medical treatises. In addition, there are added numerous documents related to the Council of Constance (1414—1418) that deal with the condemnation of John Hus and with the question of Communion under both kinds.

A collection of juridical works from around 900, not produced in the Cloister of St. Gall, but in a thus far unidentifiable scriptorium in the eastern Frankish empire. The two most important texts in this manuscript compilation are a copy of the "Bussbuch" (Book of Penances) by Bishop Halitgar of Cambrai († 830) and the important law collection Collectio LIII titulorum.

The paper manuscript, bound with a limp binding, is composed of four parts written in the first half of the fifteenth century. Parts II and IV are probably to be ascribed to the hand of Johannes de Nepomuk, who came from the Cistercian house of Nepomuk in Bohemia. The manuscript probably reached the Abbey of St. Gall by the middle of the fifteenth century at the latest. It contains Latin sermons, spiritual treatises, and documents pertaining to the Council of Constance in the years 1417–1418.

This extensive manuscript miscellany was written by the secular priest Matthias Bürer. According to the numerous colophons, he finished the copies of the texts in the period from ca. 1448 to 1463 in Kenzingen (Baden-Württemberg) and in many places in Tyrol. The manuscript transmits among other things several theological treatises, a confessors' manual, two mirrors of confession, an ars moriendi (“the art of dying”), the Acts of the Apostles with the Glossa ordinaria, sermons, as well as Books II–IV of Pope Gregory the Great's Dialogues. After the death of Matthias Bürer in 1485, the manuscript went, along with other books, to the Abbey of St. Gall, in accordance with a 1470 agreement.

This paper manuscript contains first of all a series of draft sermons dated by the colophon to 1381 (p. 80). There then follows, in the same hand as before, a partial copy of Defensor of Ligugé's Liber scintillarum (pp. 80-96), miracles (pp. 96-108) and an index (pp. 108-110). A different hand copied book IV of Augustine's De doctrina christiana and makes numerous marginal annotations (pp. 113-162). Next comes, probably in the hand of the wandering monk Gall Kemli († 1481), Aileranus Sapiens' interpretation of the ancestors of Christ (pp. 163-168), as well as excerpts from theological texts, including the Mammotrectus by the Franciscan Johannes Marchesinus.

The first quire transmits various texts written non-uniformly (pp. 5-20). After a short, one-column text De excommunicatione (p. 22) is Jean Gerson's De audienda confessione (pp. 23a–70a). There then follow two works ascribed to Augustine in the Middle Ages, namely De spiritu et anima (cap. I-XXXIII on pp. 70a–92b) and Speculum (pp. 92b–109b); Bernard of Clairvaux's De gratia et libero arbitrio (pp. 110a–138a); Bonaventura's De compositione hominis exterioris under the title Speculum monachorum (pp. 139a–154a) and Lucius Annaeus Seneca's De quattuor virtutibus cardinalibus (pp. 154a–166b). Pages 23a-109b are written in a two-column textualis with red headings and blue and red alternating pen-flourished initials as well as pieds-de-mouche. On pp. 110a-166b only red ink was used for such highlights. Between pp. 6 and 7 a slip of paper with writing is pasted in. On the lower margin distinctiones are often added (pp. 30–34, 72–76, 82–85, 111, 113, 121). Within the ruling lines of column 138a is a number-matrix. In column 138b there is a pen trial (ANNO with flourishes). There is a fair amount of marginalia. The pasteboard binding from the 17th or 18th century has a white leather cover with doubled scudding decoration as well as two green laces. The table of contents was added by Pius Kolb (p. 1).
