Walahfridus, Strabo (808-849)
This codex is a particularly important manuscript of collected texts. Especially important are the Inscriptiones Urbis Romae and the Itinerarium Urbis Romae. The Ordo Romanus XXIII for use on Good Friday, transmitted only in this manuscript, is also notable. Additional contents of this codex include a selection from the Notae of Marcus Valerius Probus, the Gesta Salvatoris (Evangelium Nicodemi), Varia Poemata and a text entitled De inventione s. Crucis. There is no information about how the manuscript traveled to Pfäfers and then on to Einsiedeln (most likely during the 14th century).

This codex contains over a hundred lives of the saints and acts of the martyrs, most of them accompanied by rubricated initials and incipits. Aside from a few decorated initials, also red, there is no book decoration. The layout of the manuscript and the careful preparation of the parchment with artful colored needlework express the tradition of the scriptorium under Abbot Frowin (1143-1178). The staid script in black ink, often interrupted by another finer hand, sets this volume apart from the others from Frowin's library; it is therefore also possible that this codex was made under Frowin's successor, Berchtold (1178-1197).

The two main components of this manuscript are the lives of the house saints of St. Gall (Gallus, Otmar, Wiborada and Notker Balbulus) and of the apostles and early Christian saints and martyrs, and the Chronicle of the Abbey of St. Gall, from the Casus sancti Galli by Ratpert (612-883) to the Continuatio by Conradus de Fabaria (1204-1234). St. Gall reformer Vadian added marginal notes, some of them quite detailed and critical, to the text describing the history of the cloister. The codex also contains chronicalistic notes about St. Gall and Switzerland (14th/15th centuries), the Reise in das Heilige Land by Steffan Kapfman, and computistic, medical, astronomical and theological texts. On two previously empty pages (pp. 324-325) St. Gall abbey librarian Idelfons von Arx added four recipes for making faded handwriting legible.

A highly important poetry manuscript containing the works of the Reichenau scholar and Abbot Walahfrid Strabo (809/10-849). In addition to a wealth of short poems of both a spiritual and a worldly nature, the volume also includes verse legends about both the Cappadocian martyr Mammes (De vita et fine Mammae monachi) and the Irish Abbot Blathmac (Versus Strabi de beati Blaithmaic vita et fine), the Dream-vision of Reichenau monk Wetti (Visio Wettini) and the poem De imagine Tetrici, a discussion of the now lost statue of Theoderich the Great on horseback, which Charlemagne had moved from Ravenna to his palace in Aachen. The manuscript was produced in the Abbey of St. Gall during the second half of the 9th century.
