Moving manuscripts and the problems they pose for digital libraries
In the last 12 years alone, 95 manuscripts (of the 1,660 published on e-codices) have changed locations. We assume that, in a stable political environment, such a number is by no means above average. Even if numerous manuscripts should remain in the same location for centuries, above all in Switzerland (for example, in St. Gall, Einsiedeln or Engelberg), each year 0.5% of all manuscripts could be relocated, and even more, of course, in unstable political environments. Within a century, then, approximately half of all manuscripts will be relocated. This fact must be taken into consideration with regard to digital libraries. Shelfmarks are ephemeral, and identifiers should therefore not depend on location.
For the great majority of manuscripts, migration is the rule, rather than the exception, and this rule holds not just for the past, but also for the present.
