Manuscript Summary:A highly important poetry manuscript containing the works of the Reichenau scholar and Abbot Walahfrid Strabo (809/10-849). In addition to a wealth of short poems of both a spiritual and a worldly nature, the volume also includes verse legends about both the Cappadocian martyr Mammes (De vita et fine Mammae monachi) and the Irish Abbot Blathmac (Versus Strabi de beati Blaithmaic vita et fine), the Dream-vision of Reichenau monk Wetti (Visio Wettini) and the poem De imagine Tetrici, a discussion of the now lost statue of Theoderich the Great on horseback, which Charlemagne had moved from Ravenna to his palace in Aachen. The manuscript was produced in the Abbey of St. Gall during the second half of the 9th century.(smu)

Cod. 869 ist von Einer Hand; allein es sind von einer zweiten, deren Einträge an den mangelnden Anfangsbuchstaben, sowie durch Feder und Dinte kenntlich sind, nach der Minirung des Ganzen noch 5 Stücke beigeschrieben, die also dem Walafrid fremd sein können, nämlich p. 126 (Inter convivas residens 20 Verse; bei Canis. VI, 603 als Theil des vorausgehenden Gedichts an Grimalt de morte Wettini abgedr.); p. 142: De Maria virgine (Sit dominus tecum
Canis. VI, 612); p. 155: de S. Gallo (Vepribus offensus Canis. VI, 619); p. 156: Carmen Bedae de psalmo 122 (Laudate altithronum
Canis. VI, 619 und dazu wieder 3 abgesonderte Verse am Schluss) und p. 257: Aliud (Hartperto superi septo
Canis. VI, 668). Auch die kleinen Epigramme p. 195 bis 196 (Bibl. PP. XV, p. 228), die nochmals im Cod. 899 p. 130 bis 131 vorhanden sind, könnten, obgleich von der Hand des Schreibers von No. 869 selbst, aus einer anderen Quelle als Walafrid herstammen.
