Manuscript Summary:A copy of the Liber scintillarum, a text originally written in about 730 by the monk Defensor of Ligugé (near Poitiers), produced during the 9th century, not at the Abbey of St. Gall. The 81 chapter Liber scintillarum is a florilegium (anthology) of maxims and sayings attributed to God and the saints, derived from the Bible and the writings of the church fathers. The last part of the volume contains fragments of lessons from the monastic liturgy of the hours (lectiones), as well as aphorisms.(smu)

Der Abdruck in Opp. Bedae VII, 370-458 endigt mit Kap. 80 = p. 250 Codicis. Laut alter Vorrede eines Cod. Casinens. bei Mabillon Annal. II Append. No. 23 und bei Fabric. Bibl. med. lat. II, 56 ist das Buch von einem Mönch Defensor grammaticus coenovio Locutiacense [Ligugé in Poitou] um 730 geschrieben; in Cod. 230 saec. IX incip. wird es dem Eligius beigelegt, in einer Bambergerhs. dem Hucbald; Bei Antonius Bibl. Hisp. I, 350 dem Paul Alvarus zu Corduba um 847, was jedoch mit dem hohen Alter der st. galler Hss. unvereinbar ist. Den Namen Beda's trägt keine derselben; dass aber das Liber scintillarum in den Codd. gar keinen Namen führe, wie Oudin will (Comm. de scriptt. eccl. ant. I, p. 1706) ist unrichtig. Cf.
