Manuscript Summary: This codex contains the miracles of Saint Thomas of Canterbury, which the Benedictine monk Benedict of Peterborough began to collect after Thomas’ murder on December 29, 1170. The manuscript, which has beautiful initials with scroll ornamentation on p. 12, was written by two hands in the Southwestern region of Germany towards the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century. The collection of miracles is divided into four books, of which the last nine chapters (IV.95-96, V.1-4, VI.1-3 of this edition) and the following letter from the Bishop of Durham, Hugh du Puiset, are not numbered. The manuscript is listed in the Monastery of St. Gall catalog from the year 1461. (len)

Collation: Quaternionen, ausser V67-86, das Vorsatzblatt p. 1/2 zur 1. Lage geklebt, das letzte Blatt der letzten Lage herausgeschnitten. Römische Lagennummerierung mit schwarzer Tinte I-XI [+ XII], von der Hand des Schreibers.

Page layout: Einspaltig, 18,5/19 x 13/13,5, Linierung Tinte, Zirkellöcher, 30 Z.

Writing and hands: Sorgfältige und schöne vorgotische Buchschriften von zwei Händen:

1. p. 1-84, rechtsgeneigte, noch stark im 12. Jh. verwurzelte Hand, die den Schriften des südalemannischen Raums sehr verwandt ist, cf. die zahlreichen Abb. der Engelberger Hss. in CMD-CH II (1983), eine st. gallische Herstellung ist, von der Schriftherkunft betrachtet, nicht auszuschliessen, Bruckner hat den Cod. jedoch nicht aufgenommen;
2. p. 84-194, rückwärtsgeneigte, eindeutig gotisierende Schrift, der Rubrikator schreibt auch in diesem Teil noch vorgotisch, cf. p. 86, 124.

Decoration:

Init. orn. p. 12 im klassischen Stil des 12. Jhs., Ranken und Knollenblätter auf rot-grün-blauem Grund.
3-4-zeilige rote Init., rubr.

Binding: Einband 15. Jh., helles Leder auf Holz, einfache Streicheisenlinien, 2 neue Lederschliessen HDK-VD des 18./19. Jhs. Auf vorderem und hinterem Spiegelblatt Abdruck eines Fragments des 9. Jhs. Pergament-Titelschild auf Vorderdeckel: Miracula .S. thome chanturiensis episcopi, 15. Jh. Darunter kleines papierenes Signaturenschildchen mit der Zahl 81, ca. 18. Jh.

Acquisition of the manuscript:

In StiBSG ev. seit Entstehung, spätestens seit dem 16. Jh. Scherrer (1875) gibt Identität mit Kat. von 1461 an, ohne Präzisierung, zu vermuten ist der Eintrag N 9: Miraculum sancti thome canthuariensis episcopi, vgl. MABK (1918), p. 110 (die Signatur N 9 findet sich aber gleichenorts weiter unten auch für eine Martinsvita und Medizinisches, nicht in unserm Band).
