Manuscript Summary: "The king of palimpsests": parchment fragments from late antiquity that were erased and reused at a later time, sometimes more than once. The scholarly significance of the palimpsests normally lies in the older texts. Some works have only been preserved as palimpsests. This volume, compiled by the librarian Ildefonse of Arx before and after 1800 from single fragments found in the abbey library, contains among many other texts the oldest known copy of the Mulomedicina of Vegetius (5th century), the only known poems and prose by Flavius Merobaudes (5th century) and the so-called "St. Gallen oracles", or "Sortes Sangallenses" (6th century). IX in.) hsgg. von Bethmann im Serapeum 1845 p. 29; von Wilmanns: Ein Fragebüchlein in Haupt's Zeitschr. 1870 XV p. 166 (vgl. Müllenhoff und Scherer Denkm. p. 344) und von E. Wölflin im Berliner academ. Monatsbericht Febr. 1873 p. 106-118, wo der Text überdies aus einer zweiten noch ältern Schlettstatterhs. No. 1093 (saec. VII in Uncial) abgedruckt ist. - Die Rubrik Cod. S. Gall. No. 40 p. 304 ‘Inc. Joca epi ad sacerdotes’ bedeutet gleichfalls ein Gespräch des Bischofs mit seinen Priestern (über die Messe) und nicht die Schrift eines ‘Bischofs Joca’, wie Weidmann es missverstand.

Vocabularium latinum.
Vocabular mit vielen roman. Wörtern in zwei Columnen, das zu erklärende Wort links, die Erklärung rechts; in alphabet. Ordnung, welche sechsmal von vorn anfängt, also vielleicht zu 6 Autoren gehört, daher die wiederholte Beischrift hic (d. h. an dieser Stelle in der Bedeutung) zwischen Vocabel und Erklärung, z. B. p. 100, 101 u. ö. Auch stehen die Wörter in forma finita (wie im Autor); oft sind es Redensarten von 3, 4 Worten.
- Die erste Folge beginnt S. 75 mit I (impedit), weil hier 6 Blätter fehlen, und endet p. 137 mit Zuna-cingulum.
- - Zweites Alphabet S. 137-174 unter der rothen Ueberschrift: Incipiunt glossae per ordine litterarum. Erste Vocabel: Amoenum-fertile iocundum; letzte: tenus-usque. Explicit feliciter. (Bis zum G sind hier alle Anfangsbuchstaben roth, vom L an blau oder roth.)
- - Dritte Reihe p. 174 bis 228 Incipit expositio sermonum scolasticorum. Erstes Wort: adipiscitur-obtinet; letztes: utpute-praesertim sibi (lies: sive) quippe. Die erklärten Vocabeln sind meist keine wissenschaftlichen, sondern ganz gewöhnliche. Bis S. 202 rothe Anfangsbuchst.
