John, Mandeville (1300-1372)
Manoscritto composito costituito di tre parti nelle quali sono raccolte delle traduzioni in francese di classiche relazioni di viaggio dall'Estremo Oriente. Il manoscritto, soprattutto nella prima e nella terza parte, è riccamente illustrato con decorazioni dorate ed una raffinata ornamentazione marginale costituita da tralci vegetali; tuttavia non contiene delle illustrazioni. La presenza di stemmi dipinti permette di identificare quale precedente possessore la famiglia de Pons de Saint-Maurice dal Périgord; più tardi il codice venne acquisito da Jacques Bongars, che alla fine della sua vita stava preparando un volume di fonti relative ai viaggi in Asia.

Una etichetta posteriore descrive il contenuto: Sermones de beata virgine super Missus est. Item tabula, in qua continentur 7 virtutes e da mano successiva Tractatus contra pestem et tractatus super Egredietur virga. Il primo testo (1r-48r) offre una spiegazione dell'Ave Maria in 14 prediche. Frederich von Amberg ha annotato il Tractatus bonus de VI nominibus corporis Christi del monaco cistercense di Heilbronn (67r-97v). Seguono la copia di un trattato sulla peste (100r-105r), la postilla sul Venerdì Santo del domenicano Antonio Azaro Parmense (105v-123r) e altri testi che probabilmente interessarono Amberg come materiale per le prediche.

Allo stesso tempo racconto di viaggio e libro di geografia, i Voyages di Jean de Mandeville, composti probabilmente intorno al 1355-1357, incontrarono un grande successo nel Medio Evo. Le numerose copie manoscritte permettono di distinguere tre versioni diverse del testo francese, da cui discendono le traduzioni in latino e nelle lingue volgari. In tedesco, la traduzione più antica, che rimonterebbe al 1393-1399 ca., è quella di Michel Velser, un membro della famiglia von Völs (Fiè, Alto Adige). L'esemplare S 94, della biblioteca del vescovo di Sion Walter Supersaxo (ca. 1402-1482) e del figlio Giorgio (ca. 1450-1529), presenta numerose iniziali ornate, talvolta zoomorfe o antropomorfe; i fogli di guardia, con annotazioni, sono di pergamena. Sulla base della lingua utilizzata, il manoscritto dovrebbe provenire dalla Svizzera nordalpina. La nota di possesso a c. 120v menziona uno zio «G» che potrebbe rimandare allo stesso Giorgio Supersaxo. Nella legatura si trovava un frammento di un atto pontificio, databile senza dubbio alla metà del XIII secolo, indirizzato da un papa Innocenzo all'abate di Kempten. Il codice S 94 va confrontato con un altro manoscritto della biblioteca Supersaxo, il S 99, che contiene una versione francese dei Viaggi.

Allo stesso tempo racconto di viaggio e libro di geografia, i Voyages di Jean de Mandeville, composti probabilmente intorno al 1355-1357, incontrarono un grande successo nel Medio Evo. Esistono tre versioni diverse del testo francese; il manoscritto S 99 si collega alla versione «continentale». Come in altri manoscritti di questa versione, i Voyages (cc. 1r-122v, con l'explicit a c. 123v e un'aggiunta alle cc. 124r-125r) sono seguiti dalla Preservacion de Epidimie (cc. 122v-123v); la reale identità dei due autori fa discutere e potrebbe anche confondersi. Nell'esemplare S 99, proveniente dalla biblioteca del vescovo di Sion Walter Supersaxo (ca. 1402-1482) e del figlio Georg (ca. 1450-1529), i margini superiori sono riempiti dallo sviluppo ornamentale delle aste ascendenti, che talvolta danno origine a dei motivi zoomorfi o antropomorfi. La biblioteca Supersaxo annovera un'altra versione dei Voyages, il codice S 94, nella traduzione tedesca di Michel Velser. Analogamente ad altri due manoscritti di questa stessa biblioteca, l'S 97 bis (una raccolta miscellanea comprendente specialmente il romanzo di Ponto e Sidonia) e l'S 100 (Statuti della Savoia), l'S 99 fu copiato da Claude Grobanet, attestato nel 1474 a Martigny, dove era al servizio di Antoine Grossi Du Châtelard, signore di Isérables (morto nel 1495). All'inizio del XVI sec. la famiglia di Antoine Du Châtelard conobbe apparentemente delle difficoltà finanziarie; i loro beni – e con questi probabilmente anche i tre manoscritti – passarono allora nelle mani di Georg Supersaxo. L'atto incompleto che fa da guardia posteriore, di pergamena, menziona tra gli altri Martigny, 147[3] e un signore di Ys[érables (?)].

Manoscritto cartaceo proveniente dalla biblioteca dell'abbazia di Pfäfers, dissoltasi nel 1838. Contiene la traduzione tedesca dei Viaggi di Giovanni di Mandeville eseguita da Otto di Diemeringen, largamente diffusa nel tardo Medioevo. Corredato di numerose illustrazioni colorate a penna e disegni a inchiostro.

La parte principale di questo voluminoso manoscritto è costituita da una versione abbreviata della Cronaca universale redatta nel 1459 da Johannes Platterberger e Dietrich Truchseß (p. 3−796), che nella tradizione bibliografica viene anche chiamata “St. Galler Weltchronik”. All'interno di questa cronaca si trovano anche il cosiddetto St. Galler Cato (p. 259−260; Disticha Catonis; Von Catho dem weysen und seinen spruchen), una traduzione parziale dell'opera De officiis di Marco Tullio Cicerone (p. 263−265) così come altre citazioni da varie opere di Cicerone (p. 265−271). Fa seguito una versione in lingua tedesca dello scambio di epistole fittivo del Meister Wichwolt tra Alessandro Magno e Dindimo, capo dei Bramani (p. 809−815; Cronica Allexandri des grossen konigs), la versione tedesca della “Dreikönigslegende” (Historia trium regum) di Johannes von Hildesheim (p. 816−854) e il resoconto del viaggio in India di Jean de Mandeville nella versione in tedesco di Otto von Diemeringen (p. 854−917). Alla fine (p. 918−940) il volume contiene in versione completa il libro di viaggio del bavarese Johannes Schiltberger (1380-dopo il 1427), caduto prigioniero degli Osmani. La decorazione è costituita da numerose lombarde rosse e blu. Nel 1570 il volume si trovava in possesso di Luzius Rinck von Baldenstein (p. 940), cognato del principe-vescovo Diethelm Barer (1530-1564) di S. Gallo e, al più tardi nel XVII secolo, venne integrato nei fondi della biblioteca dell'abbazia di S. Gallo (p. 3: Liber Monasterii S. Galli).
